I did a custom necklace similar to this in three shades of purple. I had some lavender Peeled Paint beads left over so I added some navy Peeled Paint beads, fresh water stick, drop, baroque and round pearls.  Then topped it off with some polymer clay starfish and shell charms

I’m founder of Kids Fitness Camp that takes place in June and this year it will be in all surrounding communities and not just my own.  I’m so exhausted thrilled about this I can’t even find the words to express myself.  I’m so lucky to have a great team of professionals and sponsors who help me with this huge event every year.  We all share the same goal and vision for this Fitness Camp.  That dosen’t always happen.

It is a week long event and when the kids aren’t moving, dancing, running, jumping and jiving, we have a little creative time.

This year I thought we would make macrame bracelets like this with my buttons…I need to finish…HELP!

I was very lucky (thank you Cindy) and got partnered up with Cece Cormier.  Cece is a self taught artist and bead maker. Hot glass, metals and fiber are her current favorites.   This is a beautiful mix of buttons and disks, Weeeeeeeeeeeeee!  I was unable to create something with all of them, but I tried.

I made a ring with Cece’s Lampwork button using sterling 20 gauge wire.

I used Cece’s shank glass button as my clasp and my polymer clay Peeled Paint art beads with variegated gold leaf.

I wire wrapped Cece’s disk bead and made some connecting wire links with heavy gauge wire.

I used my Peeled Paint art beads with copper leaf and made my own split rings then wrapped them in hemp cord.

I finish the necklace with a hand made clasp I wrapped in copper wire to accent the copper leaf on the beads.

This is another one of Cece’s disk beads.  I used some of my 8mm Peeled Paint art beads with variegated gold leaf and strung them on purple hemp cord.

These colors just sing like that little bird.  The faceted polymer clay beads are from Barbara Bechtel Second Surf shop. I just love the feel of them and they’re a little wonky like me. I added two yellow glass beads and my new Fractured Art Beads, but more on that later. This bracelet is strung on red hemp cord.

The little birdies have not migrated into my shop yet, but I’m working on it. If you would like one in a particular color just let me know today. I hope to have them in my store soon. The button closure is exculsive to my designs.  I don’t offer them for sale, but I do take custom orders.  This button I can make in two different sizes.  More on my buttons in another post coming soon.

Fractured Art Beads

I have been working on these for almost a year.  They have frustrated me, mystified me, damnified me…Grrrrrrrrrrrr!  I could not come up with an emulsion that would stick to the beads and when I did, it was not the effect I was going for.  It was just a big blob.  I’ll just say it involves liquefying solid clay and 3 more ingredients.

Fresco Art Beads

It’s Bead Table Wednesday and these beads have been on my table since last year.  I started working on them again a few months ago.  I had trouble getting the effect I wanted and ruined dozens of beads.  I ended up mixing up my own secret emulsion. These beads start with a polymer clay base, rolled into rounds and cured.  Next I sand and prime them, add the emulsion, let dry, add color, and inlay color, then varnish   I don’t have any available right now, but I’m taking orders and can make them in any color.

Some of my tools

Tools are the lifeblood to my handmade jewelry business, Jewelry By Jeannie! So I thought it would be fun to share a quick snapshot of some of the tools near my jewelry workbench — pliers, wire cutters, hole punches. Nothin’ too fancy. I will say, if you’re working a lot with these tools (and I am!), don’t skimp on the quality. You will pay more for quality tools, but they will be more durable and last you much, much longer than the cheaper tools. Plus, your hands and forearms are your MOST important tools, so treat them well with good equipment to use (and remember to stretch and not get locked into the same motion for too long).

When I look for quality in jewelry tools, I look for tools that spring back open, have ergonomic features for your hands and replaceable parts. I prefer Lindstrom over Swanstrom, two of the biggest jewelry tool brands. I find that Lindstrom tools, which are made in Sweden, are smaller in size, which fit my smaller hands, and they are lighter overall. Lindstrom tools are made in the USA and feature longer handles and heavier construction.

I’ve always said, have a pair of needle nose flat (no teeth!) pliers and a pair of wire cutters, and you’re in business.

Armed with these basics, I have all I need to create most of my handmade jewelry designs for you!

Essentials at my bench:
•Lindstrom Rx 7893 pliers

•Erem wirecutters (I’ve had these for over 9 years now and they are still sharp!)

•Swanstrom S512E flush cutters (I use these sparingly to keep blades sharp)

•Xuron wire cutters (for thicker wire ie over 20ga)

•Punch pliers (round, 1.8mm size punch)

•Bench block (for hammering against)

•Hammer (chasing)

•Rawhide hammer

•Metal ruler at least 18″ long

Serves: 4 (makes 8 wraps)
( if you invite me – serves 2)

Start to Finish: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

4 large collard leaves

1 red bell pepper

1 avocado

2-3 ounces alfalfa sprouts

1/2 lime

1 cup raw pecans

1 tablespoon tamari (gluten-free soy sauce)

1 teaspoon cumin (or 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic and 1/2 teaspoon grated ginger)

1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil

Directions:

1. To prepare collard leaves wash leaves, cut off white stem at the bottom that has no leaves and place them in a bath of warm water with juice of half a lemon. Let soak for 10 minutes. Dry the leaves off with paper towels and using a knife thinly slice down the central root (to make it easier to bend the leaves for wrapping). See detailed explanation with pictures here.

2. Slice avocado and pepper.

3. In a food processor combine pecans, tamari, cumin (or garlic ginger mix) and olive oil. Pulse until combined and mixture clumps together.

4. Place a collard leaf in front of you and layer nut mix, red pepper slices, avocado slices, a drizzle of lime juice and alfalfa sprouts. Fold over the top and bottom and then wrap up the sides. Slice in half and serve.

(about $48)

Each planet has its own unique flavor, all which sound mouthwateringly delectable: Mercury (coconut mango), Venus (lemon cream), Earth (cocoa), Mars (orange praline), Jupiter (vanilla), Saturn (rum raisin), Uranus (milk tea), Neptune (cappuccino).

If planets aren’t enough to fill your astronomical appetite, check out their meteorite series, which also features interesting flavor combinations like white chocolate with grapefruit and earl grey.

Do Over Necklace

I’m sure you can see why I chose this necklace to Do Over. Nuff said.

I cut three pieces of 6mm black leather.

Then strung the seed beads onto the wire and wrapped them around the leather cord.

I bought these magnetic clasps at a Gem show many years ago. I like them because they’re strong and have a closure.

Tracy Statler of Make Bracelets blog is hosting a Wrapped, Stacked, Layered bracelet challenge. She asked that we create a collection of three or more bracelets that work together.

I decided to do wrapped, stacked and layered. Here we go.

First we have stacked.

Kailani is Hawaiian meaning “Sea and Sky”
I used my polymer clay Peeled Paint art beads in some mouth watering colors with two of my handmade polymer clay shells.  I added some antique gold metal accent beads.  These are on heavy stretch cord.  13mm and 11mm beads.

Next are wrapped.

These I braided 1/8″ leather and the one on right I used my Peeled Paint art beads in margarita.

I decided to do a slip slide closure.  It’s too much of hassle to put them on individually.
